Re: Will GRAVITY ever be added?
The gravity of the situation is that Celestia needs no gravity. This isn't a physics simulator! The planetary orbits are actually calculated from VSOP87 data which basically computes the position of a planet or satellite in the solar system according to a specified date and time. No physic...

Re: Power outtage
I'm marvelling at America's paranoia over this. It's only a power cut , that's all - albeit a big one. It's rather disturbing that the first conclusion that people leap to now when something odd happens is 'OH MY GOD! IT'S A TERRORIST ATTACK!" America really needs to get a grip on itself. Th...

Yikes! If that's true than I guess it goes to show that you can't always put faith in what your teacher teaches.

Re: light speed in celestia to slow
Before the sun explodes it still has to expand to about the size of our solar system so if our kind does't flee the planet before it's too hot to live than no one would die from the explosion anyway, because noone will be alive anymore. This planet will probably be gone a few thousand years atleast b...

Re: Suppose the Light Speed was just 330 [m/sec];-)
Now what is c was a lot greater, like 1 ly/s? We'd have really fast computers, instant communication across the solar system... and no LT code in Celestia ;-) Well, lets consider this: one actual light year is equal to 5.878612843 E 12 statue miles. Thats under the rule that c = 186282 miles/sec. I...

Development Environment of choice for Celestia?
Chris,
Which development envorinment and OS do you use when compiling the celestia distributions for windows? This is mainly for my own curiosities sake.

Re: What are the Largest stars in Celestia ?
In 1.3.1 pre 4, HD 184283 is now 10194.45 Rsun!!
(And that's how it is without any add-on star databases) That can't be right, can it? I figure any star that big would begin to collapse in on itself almost immeadiately.

Re: Linux
I recently got started with linux myself not too long ago. I tried three other distributions (redhat, suse, and debian). What really thrilled me is the ease of installation of Mandrake. The distribution's installer automatically configures the KDE interface which is something that not a whole lot of...

Re: "Wireframe mode" crash within atmospheres
I found that if I uncomment the IgnoreGLExtensions [ "GL_ARB_vertex_program" ] line in the celestia configuration file, the error goes away. If I re-comment the line, the error returns. Chris, I don't think I can be more specific than that! BTW, the tested system is now using 1.3.1 pre 4 with ...

Re: Io at start of program
I personally believe that the reason Io is chosen as the startup location is that Io is the first of four moons discovered to be orbiting another planet by Galileo in 1610. Thus, as the discovery of these moons by a telescope represented a major first in the study of astronomy, Celestia represents a...

http://www.celestiaproject.net/celestia/files/celestia-1.3.1pre4.exe I was going to wait until I had Don's Pluto texture, but what the hell . . . That'll be in 1.3.1pre5. This version features AltSurfaces; I'll explain in more detail in a bit. --Chris Just a little correction for the URL... it's ac...

Re: The face on mars
I believe the only "face" on Mars is in fact the Cydonia region. Here's the highest resolution nasa image of the "face" http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/msss/camera/images/4_6_98_face_release/face_inverted.gif As you can see, it clearly looks like a natural land feature rather than proof of extra-terres...

I just want to simply add that Ctrl-K shows/hides markers (basically the red square) in Windows. I think it's the same for the linux version but I didn't check it yet.

The problem is definately hardware specific. I tested for this issue on an older system and the problem is non-existant... Re: "Wireframe mode" crash within atmospheres
The problem may only appear on certain hardware. I had all the OGL options in Celestia maxed out for the graphics card... pretty much, everything that Celestia and OGL could do with that card. BTW, I'm using the latest detonator drivers Nvidia has available which should be v44.03 (released May 14, 2...

"Wireframe mode" crash within atmospheres
Hi, Celestia 1.3.1pre3 crashes with a fatal exception error when the user evokes the "Wireframe mode" command (Ctrl-W in Windows) after using the "Goto Surface" command (Ctrl-G in Windows). This appears to happen on any planet with a defined atmosphere in Celestia. This error does not occur when the...
