Re: Post your Celestia videos!
That's nice Don... thinking of joining CGSociety myself... Thanks I used it as a way of getting future business. Can't say that it worked but the price was reasonable. I did not cultivate the social networking side of the sight I think that is how you get know and build your reputation. I think I a...

Re: Celestia on official Cassini website
Yep, they sure are :D  We post previews of ISS (and occasionally other instruments) observations for each Cassini orbit. Celestia is used simply because it is the easiest for me to update (in terms of spice kernels and textures) and the graphics are a lot better. Are you working at CICLOS, vo...

Celestia on official Cassini website
I get emails from the Cassini mission people (CICLOS). They posted a link to there site about Mimas that is due for a fly by this weekend. Low and behold there are some images of the moon that looks like screen grabs from good old Celestia. Here is the link http://ciclops.org/view/6188/Rev126?js=1

Re: Post your Celestia videos!
Here is my contribution. I created this several years ago and loaded on a hosted website before I retired. This event happen on Feb 21, 2007 at 7:50PM PST. Saturn's ring plane is passed by the Cassini space craft. I don't have a CEL. See if you can launch Celestia and position yourself close to this...

Re: Celestia under Windows 7
I have been running Celestia on Window 7 (64) for about two weeks or so. I bought a HP G71, it came with dual Pentium processors (not dual core 2), 4 Gig RAM, 320 Gig HD and 512 Meg Nvidia card. Everything is working just fine with only exceptions are learning the new keyborad shortcut combinations ...

Re: Windows 7 driver issues with laptop graphics chips
From what I have read and heard NVidia is the one I would have over the ATI boards. ATI are gaming boards and work well for that purpose. Celestia is driven using Open GL 2.0. ATI does not play nice with Open GL were NVidia does. Most CAD and animation programs use Open GL. Were games are all over t...

Re: Celestia under Windows 7
Can someone provide a LINK to MS were the download is for this virtual 32 bit emulator is? I did some looking around at MS and as usual nothing is obvioius and easy to get to. I found I was in areas we they are talking about trouble shooting the OS and no LINKS back or forward to anything looking li...

Re: Texture in 1.6
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Celestia v1.6 has replaced the r and R keyboard shortcuts by the "Render" menu option "Texture Resolution". (Those keys will be used for something else in a future version of Celestia.) That menu option controls which texture directory Cele...

Texture in 1.6
This may have been asked back when v1.6 was made public. I noticed that the file size for Celestia (windows version) was 16 or so megs. I have over time downloaded higher res images of most of the planets. In 1.6 it looks like it does not use any of these images. I am referring to images in the text...

Re: Celestia 1.6: *.png and *.psd problem
PSD files are Adobe Photoshop files I don't believe Celestia understand these files. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files are used by Celestia. There main feature is that it supports an alpha channel that add transparency to the image. Cloud images over plants are a good example of PNG files. I lik...

Nebula and such in 3D
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I thought I would post a link to a fellow who posted some interesting 3D images of various nebula, galaxies and other things of a Celestial nature from another site I use. I am not sure how he does it but they look pretty cool (once you get your eyes fixed r...

Re: Annular Eclipse
Thanks LordFerret, I had saved the coding for this with '<>' but they also have quot marks that delimit the url were the '[]' don't. I will save this so I can cut/paste it in the future. Hope you see what I saw. Otherwise I will have egg on my face :( . As I also said the orbits maybe off from reali...

Annular Eclipse
I go to Astronomy Picture of the Day daily. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html Today is an annular eclipse in the India Ocean. I started up Celestia and was watching the eclipse move across the ocean when I saw two small objects fly by close to the eclipse. After turning on satellites I ...

Re: Splash screens for running multiple versions of Celestia...
To my mind, DonAVP, your new shot seems similar to the last one. Changing planet sizes doesn't do much. Hummm... Why do you really align the planets? You keep the line but you drop planets a little on left and on the right; just align Jupiter and the Sun in the background? It might let you guess or...

Re: Splash screens for running multiple versions of Celestia...
Nice try John. I don't care for the box with Celestia in it. I like the effect of the shadow on the rings with the chrome letters. However the chrome letters are reflecting a blue sky and terrestrial ground. The chrome needs to reflect its environment. That would be black and very uninteresting. May...

Re: Splash screens for running multiple versions of Celestia...
Don, Well, if you don't mind an honest opinion here, I don't like it. I very much like the planets and the image as a whole, but I simply do NOT like the text. Sorry, Bob No offense taken. I just quickly hacked the text and made it look back lit. There are hundreds of fonts out there so that can be...

Re: Splash screens for running multiple versions of Celestia...
Sorry I am late. I read this thread a few days ago. Here is my suggestion for the 1.6 splash screen

I could play with the planet sizes but the is taken from the movie 2001 space odyssey if you recall.

Re: Object Specular Reflections
Bob, UV's are 2D maps that provide the data needed to show the texture on the 3D surface. You need to load the UV map. It will have a name of some kind. I do not now anything about Anim8or but I am sure it works like most other 3D modeling programs. Figuring out the interface is usually the problem....

Re: celestia 1.6
To be a little purist how do you know that the rings would look like that you posted. As far as I know Cassini has not given any images at that close a range. Correct me if I am wrong. One of the things I like about Celestia is it's effort to be scientifically correct or if subject to speculation it...
