I now have 12 GB of physical memory in my PC

But it wasn't enough to satisfy Celestia's needs.

I looked at the Windows 11 paging file.
It was set to 768MB max, which is nothing.
Sites on the net, like Malekal, recommend up to 3 x Ram.
I changed my values to 12288MB (12GB)
The Speccy software now tells me
12GB physical memory
17GB virtual memory

Celestia's loading is going much better.

(367943) Duende (2012 DA14)

Post #128by EarthMoon » 23.11.2023, 14:35

[small interruption of gironde's asteroid flood]

This is an addon for the asteroid (367943) Duende (2012 DA14) which flew by Earth on 15th February 2013. Its orbital semi-major axis decreased (sea screenshots).

The asteroid mesh is semi-fictional and has been created from this observation data.

I carried out a systematic check of the .ssc files of the asteroids that I proposed on the forum.
This check was carried out with EarthMoon celcheck.
The celcheck_1.3 version which integrates multiline parameter control being too slow, I used the celcheck_test1 version.
You will find in the archive, the corrected files as well as a text file listing all the errors and corrections made.

54598 Bienor

Post #135by SpaceExplorer » 15.07.2024, 18:12

54598 Bienor is a centaur that grazes the orbit of Uranus, discovered on 2000-Aug-27. Stellar occultations observed between 2022 and 2023 revealed that Bienor shape is highly elongated, as explained in this article.

Thanks to N3cronium for helping me determine the ascending node!

JPL update for asteroids
Asteroids numbered from 699992 to 699999 have been published by JPL. I have added them to my files
Below you will find the new edition which contains all asteroids from 690000 to 699999

JPL has also published asteroids from 700000 to 720000 but I haven't worked on those yet.

The lists that accompany my files allow you to remove duplicate asteroids (unnumbered / numbered) from your files.

2024 RW₁

Post #139by DaveBowman2001 » 05.09.2024, 16:34

cover_image.jpg
About 12 minutes before impact over the Philippines

A meter-sized meteoroid known as 2024 RW₁ became the ninth asteroid discovered on a direct collision course with Earth. It entered the atmosphere off the coast of Cagayan Valley, Luzon Island in the Philippines yesterday (2024-Sept-4, 00:39 UTC+8), 14 hours after it was first spotted by the Catalina Sky Survey. Despite the stormy weather brought by the outgoing Typhoon Yagi (Enteng) at the time, its fireball was successfully observed and recorded by many Filipino astronomers and space enthusiasts as far south as Metro Manila and Cavite.

2024_RW1.gif
Simulation of the final six seconds before impact (Click to view GIF animation)

A huge thank you to N3cronium for giving the orbital data (and heads up!) necessary to make this small SSC add-on! Simple fireball effects were made by me, based on the code first introduced from Medusa's Tunguska add-on

(50835) 2000 FX40 and 2014 HO64

Post #140by SpaceExplorer » 10.09.2024, 17:25

In 2024-Sep-11, these two main-belt asteroids passed within about 300 km of each other (although there is considerable positional uncertainty for 2014 HO64). In any case, this close encounter could help determine the masses of these two asteroids.

NOTES:

- The closest approach occurs in 2024-Sep-11 04:54:50 UTC;

- JPL SSD does not report any albedo or diameter values for 2014 HO64. Therefore, I used the CNEOS tool to obtain a estimate, with its absolute magnitude and assuming a default albedo of 0.15;

- There are no known rotational parameters for any of the asteroids. Therefore, I assumed a default value of 6 hours for the rotational period of both.
