Long-lost asteroid Hermes recovered

The long-lost asteroid Hermes has been recovered at last!

Hermes is the only remaining asteroid which was named but unnumbered. It created a sensation in 1937 when it passed the earth at a distance of only 460,000 miles, but was not observed long enough for a reliable orbit to be determined and was therefore lost. (It now turns out that Hermes made an even closer pass by earth in 1942 which went unseen.)

Recent observations indicate the asteroid is about 0.9 km in diameter, and is actually a binary object with components of nearly equal size.

Hermes will pass about 4,000,000 miles from earth on November 5, and will be bright enough to be seen with amateur telescopes.
