Help with choosing a telescope...

Post #1by JackHiggins » 29.10.2003, 01:18

Hey all

I'm interested in getting a telescope for Christmas (or after christmas- whenever they're cheaper...!) but i'm looking for some advice from some people "in the know" about these kinds of things- so obviously I came straight here! :)

Anyway- I have a few criteria:
  • Absolutely must be less than €700 - that's my limit. (Currently that's $816.409 US, and ?481.145 UK)
  • I'm going to have to buy it online, or at least not in Ireland. As you may know, we're now the second most expensive country in Europe...
  • Equatorial mount
  • I don't want a refractor- every source i've seen says good ones are very expensive, and chromatic aberration isn't very nice...
  • I don't want any of this beginner stuff- I want something that i won't get bored of quickly...
  • Something I can impress my friends & family with- hehe... :) (Not just the images, but a telescope they can look at and say - WOW - or at least "Hey that's really cool looking!")
  • None of this fancy GoTo or GPS stuff for me - If i want to look at something i'll be able to do all that myself!
  • It must have a motor (You know, to turn as the earth turns!)
SO... That's it basically!

What i'm looking for recommendations on are:
  • What should I go for- Schmitt-Cassegrain, Newtonian reflector, Dobsonian...?
  • Good online shops for buying these - They MUST be able to ship internationally, of course!
  • The kinds of eyepieces I should think about getting (I suppose i'll probably get a lunar filter too!)
  • Any kind of fancy gadgets which could be very inexpensive but very useful nonetheless!

Currently i'm slightly shifting towards a 6" Newtonian something like this ==> http://www.telescopehouse.co.uk/product ... duct_id=26 but it's a tad too expensive... That's why I need help choosing what's the right thing to go for!

Thanks in advance- hope you can help me out here...!

(Obviously if you need more info etc just ask!)

Hi,

For that price I think you should get a Newtonian Reflector...

I got a 130/900 I bought a year ago and it's quite good. It's a "Skywatcher".

It was 500€ last year with 2 eyepieces and one Barlow 2x.
It's motorised and have an equatorial mount.

With it you can clearly see Cassini division on Saturn Rings...

If you want some photos taken with my telescope :

Jack,

Make sure you check out Ed Ting's reviews at http://www.scopereviews.com/ It's the best telescope review site that I've found so far.

Update...

I've pretty much decided on this! "Orion SkyView Pro 8 EQ with Single Axis Drive" For an 8" reflector, 1000mm focal length, $549 seems very reasonable! (It works out at €611 when including shipping charges etc. It comes with 2 Sirius Pl?ssl Eyepieces (10mm and 25mm), and a "Free" RA motor. Everything i've read about it on the net tells me that it's very good, and i'm very lucky to have found something that good, for that price, and shipped to Ireland too! :D

If anyone else has any opinions let me know...! :D

btw Kendrix I didn't mention it there last time but thanks for the advice- and nice pics too! :D
