i will put them on my ftp no matter what size (meaning less than 15 GB)

i also have the hardware to merge/edit textures up to 1 GB and above but i don't have the time...

As far as I can see 'these arguments ' don't relate to 'don't have webspace and traffic but to your exclusivity and 'self-protection'. That is still clear to see, even though Thilo's sentence is not so straight. But he said that to you before twice.
t00fri wrote:is this really all that different, given the "preamble":
Thilo wrote:... To the point with "people who cry for open source have nothing in return": Wasn't Axel beside Raul one of the lead workers for OpenUniverse? If so i think he did really much and OpenUniverse gave you the base of Celestias textures ..
Axel wrote:warm thanks, Thilo! I hope you had a lot of fun with OU. If you'd like
to talk about it, my mail address is still there.
t00fri wrote:warm thanks for OU or trying to recruit allies as usual???;-)).
t00fri wrote:OU is dead since quite a while, Thilo's "proll" remark was just above.

a) download the textures to the celestia/textures/medres directory
b) just edit the solarsys.scc with your favorite editor , search for the planet (earth, mars, moon etc..) and edit this line (eg. for earth):
Texture "earthalpha8k.dds" <- put in here whatever you called your earth-texture
do the same for all other textures you might want to use:
NightTexture "earthnight8k.dds"
BumpMap "earthbump8k.dds"
CloudMap "earth-clouds2k.dds"
save file, run celestia and oooooooooooaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
Axel wrote:So once again: Fridger, stop fishing for insults! Can't we just stop
this? We're not making progress. I suggested to support each other and
to finally do a high-quality texture pack for everyone.
Axel wrote:Once again: OU is NOT dead. It is temporaily halted and supports Celestia. I assume you have never even used it, but quite a few others have done so and were happy, especially with the freely available hi-rez texures. To construct an insult on you out of that is rather weired, OT and unecessary.
Furthermore many, many features have been (gladly) taken out of OU and redone almost 1:1 in Celestia (e.g. Solar System Browser, GoTo-Mode, soft transition, timefactor, zoom/FOV, textured Messier objects, non-sherical planetoids, atmosheric layer, 3D model support, demo-/script mode, orbital lines etc. etc.) before you heard about the program.
So please accept you're not the only valid involved person. I have heavyly supported Raul on OU since 1998 and I am not better than any newbie who came around the corner.
Nor are you.
(NOOOOO, that wasn't an insult again. Please!)
Thanks,
Axel

I was able to recognize that impression of yours.
You think of it in black and white as 'HARD WORKING DEVELOPER' against CONSUMER NEWBIES', 'LINUX' against 'WINDOWS', 'SCIENTISTS' against 'FOOTBALL'.
I'm your 'windows ... spokesperson', I'm your debile 'football' fan, I represent a crack in your shiny ebony tower.
But you're, as so often, completly wrong.![]()
I probably have more Linux installations running than you, the post about the football final was my first thought about that topic ever. Since two years I do program in OpenGL with Delphi (ask Chris).
I do own my degree, I work as a Systems Engineer for IBM.
All in all you already had enough possibilities to join in an help out with the important, continuing and general issue that started the thread.
Now for the first time I rule about you as you did about me:
Once again I have the imppression your technical difficulties are just an excuse for your 'self protection'. The more as they don't hinder you to download hughe textures and upload large screenshots.
I'm soley speaking for myself and you can save your time constructing conspiracies.
I will contact everyone who said he/she would help,
thanks in Advance.

I did this ! I downloaded textures (in jpg) there :
http://gw.marketingden.com/planets/planets.html
(they're very nice...)
And then followed your instructions.
I just wanted to change the Earth Texture so I put :
Texture "earthmap.jpg" (that's the name of my texture...)
in solarsys.scc
I put my texture in both lores and medres directories. (even in Hires)
I saved the scc file and when I launched Celestia, the Earth was only a small blue ball without any texture....

Anybody have an idea ?
Is there any restriction using a texture ?
How can I use a specularmap ?
just 'SpecularMap = "xxx"' ??
thanx

Thilo wrote:well, you cannot expect everyone to share your special interests, and
you are surely understanding this. I've always planned to get myself
in to OpenGL and 3d graphics programming, but i simply lack the time
for this. Currently i'm coding in C for some Open Source IRC Services,
already this takes much time. And how you might put it,
im also longing for more knowledge .. for example i learned the
networking functions in C using the man pages and some examples, and
learned how to use pthreads from examples to write a Proxy Scanner for
these services that is powerful enough to fight off a proxy flood
attack. So this is also learning, though not in your area. And you can
imagine, now that i am already working on this project im not starting
to work on celestia as well and learn how you might create new
textures. If my day had 48 hours, I'd love to start on it right away
;-)
